/sourcing-gifts/category/money-packet-printing/https://onlinepremiumgifts.com/sourcing-gifts/category/money-packet-printing/During Chinese New Year, it is a long-standing tradition to give money in red envelopes, commonly known as Angpow or Hong Bao (红包). These red packets are known by different names across communities—Mandarin and Cantonese speakers often call them “Hong Bao,” while Hokkien and even Malay communities may refer to them as “Angpow” or “Angpao.” Among younger generations, the term “red packet” is also widely used. Despite the different names, they all refer to the same meaningful tradition.
Giving money in these red envelopes is a symbolic gesture that represents good fortune, happiness, and blessings for the year ahead. It is an essential part of the celebration, commonly shared among family members, friends, and even business associates.
Traditionally, money is given to children as a way of wishing them luck, protection, and success. At the same time, red packets are also exchanged as a sign of respect for elders and as a gesture of care and appreciation within the family.
The money placed inside, known as ya sui qian (压岁钱), is often interpreted as “lucky money,” carrying wishes for a safe and prosperous year.
With this cultural background in mind, we would like to share more about the different finishing options available for creating a well-designed and meaningful money packet.
Angpow Material

Paper Type: 140gm Simili Paper
Printing: CMYK Full Colour 1 side
A commonly used option is 157gsm Matt Art Paper, printed in full colour on one side. This material provides a smooth surface that supports vibrant designs while maintaining a professional look.
For those looking for something slightly more distinctive, textured paper such as eggshell emboss material offers a more tactile experience. Even without additional finishing, this type of money packet already feels premium while remaining cost-effective—making it ideal for large-scale distribution.
In fact, the cost is low and highly recommend for people who are looking for cheaper solution and yet want a premium look money packet.
Angpow Finishing
Here, we showcase how a blind emboss adds a subtle yet intricate texture to the back of the money packet, creating a refined and premium tactile experience.
Texture embossing and logo embossing

Finishing: Texture embossing
Texture embossing adds subtle patterns across the surface, creating depth and a unique tactile feel. A lightly embossed angpao packet can instantly appear more refined without being overly flashy.
Hot Stamping

The above picture is added with blind emboss and hot stamping.
Blind embossing raises specific areas—usually logos or key elements—without using ink or foil. This gives your angpow packet a clean and sophisticated look, especially suitable for corporate branding.
Hot stamping applies metallic foil (such as gold or silver) onto selected areas. When combined with embossing, it transforms a simple red packet into a striking, premium piece that stands out immediately.

Now, it looks totally awesome with the hot stamping effects.
Other Finishing

For this project, our client selected two different material options. The left design features a textured embossed finish, while the right design uses a soft-touch coating. Although the difference may not be very obvious in photos, the soft-touch version feels noticeably more premium when held in hand. It offers a smooth, velvety texture that enhances the overall impression, making it a great choice for those looking for a more refined money packet.
In terms of specifications, the left design is printed on 140gsm simili paper with 4-colour printing, combined with hot stamping, texture embossing, and logo embossing (eggshell-like effect). The right design is produced on 157gsm matt art paper with 4-colour printing, finished with soft-touch lamination, hot stamping, and logo embossing.
Both designs are packed in sets of 10 pieces per packet, consisting of 5 turquoise angpow packet and 5 red red packet for a balanced and visually appealing presentation.

We hope this sharing has given you a clearer understanding of the different materials, finishing options, and design considerations when creating a money packet for Chinese New Year. From texture embossing to soft-touch finishes, each detail plays a role in shaping how your angpow packet is perceived—especially in corporate gifting where presentation matters.
